History of Building
In 1901, famous architects Friedrich Scheffel and Heinrich Scheel built the property at Krišjāņa Valdemara Street, number 23, based on the facade sketches by Berlin’s famous architect Albert Giesecke. The first owner of the property was Johann Grünberg Sawitzky. Therefore, in the beginning, the property was called ‘’Sawitzky’s house’’. It is worth mentioning that a number of iconic Art Nouveau buildings in Riga are designed by Scheffel and Scheel. In 1910, the property was acquired by the famous Latvian publisher Antons Benjamiņš. In 1923, Anton’s daughter Marta, married Mintauts Čakste, who was the son of Jānis Čakste, the first president of Independent Republic of Latvia. During the years of his presidency (1922–1927), Jānis Čakste was a frequent guest here whilst visiting his son’s family. After the World War II the building played important role for Soviet authorities. Following Latvian Independence in 1991, it was converted into a service hotel for the members of the Parliament of Republic Latvia. In 1995, the property was finally officially handed back to its previous owner, the Čakstes’ family, who were, descendants of the 1st President of Republic of Latvia. In 2006, following complete renovation and reconstruction it welcomed its first guests as a hotel.
